Telemundo taps Univision anchor Arantxa Loizaga for morning show “news first” revamp

Arantxa Loizaga

Univision weekend anchor Arantxa Loizaga jumps ship to Telemundo.

Loizaga, who had been with Univision for over 13 years, will be one of three news anchors for Telemundo network’s revamped live 3-hour weekday morning show.

Starting Monday, February 15, “Un Nuevo Día” becomes “Hoy Día,” with a “news first” approach.

The rebranded morning show will have three news anchors.

Loizaga will be joined by the recently hired Nacho Lozano, brought in from Mexico, who was previously a news anchor, and radio and television host at Grupo Imagen. Nicole Suárez, currently an anchor for the morning show and a correspondent for Noticias Telemundo, rounds up the news desk trio.

Telemundo is also adding Carlos Robles as chief meteorologist, moving him up from the company’s Houston station.

Entertainment will still have a place in the program, which airs from 7 to 10 am ET. Actress and TV personality Adamari and Stephanie “Chiquibaby” Himonidis will continue on the show as entertainment hosts.

Also on board the morning train is Executive Chef Alfredo Oropeza, who joined Telemundo in late 2020, and will continue to do kitchen and cooking segments.

Telemundo’s morning show has struggled to gain traction over the years, with multiple rebrandings and talent shuffles.

Over the last 16 years, Telemundo has renamed its morning show several times, including: “Esta Mañana,” “De Mañanita,” “Cada Día” (canceled in 2008) and “Levántate,” before its current “Un Nuevo Día.”

For “Cada Día,” Telemundo brought María Antonieta Collins to host the show, which never took off in ratings. Telemundo also brought in several “Despierta América” hosts, but eventually jettisoned them as well.

Univision’s “Despierta América” bested Telemundo’s “Un Nuevo Día” in ratings across the board in 2020, according to Nielsen. Overall, for the year, Univision’s morning show led in key demos by wide margins: Adults 18-34 by 67% and Adults 18-49 by 83%.
