Telemundo completes Ramar acquisition, taps Tony Canales to lead New Mexico stations, launch newscasts

October 7, 2021 by Veronica Villafañe

NBCUniversal Local announced it has completed its acquisition of four full power stations from Ramar Communications in the Albuquerque DMA. The transaction expands Telemundo’s station footprint from 30 to 31 markets, and for the first-time, NBCUniversal Local will own and operate a MeTV local channel.

Tony Canales, Telemundo Houston’s President and GM since 2012, will now also serve as President and GM of KASA-TV, in charge of Telemundo Nuevo Mexico’s station operations.

With KASA becoming a Telemundo O&O, plans are in the works to launch local newscasts in the Albuquerque DMA.

Canales will also oversee the hiring of newsroom staff.

Patricia Buchanan, VP of Sales for Telemundo Houston, will also add VP of Sales of Telemundo Nuevo México to her title. She’ll oversee all local sales activities for KASA-TV and will focus on developing and maintaining local partnerships and revenue opportunities.
