Telemundo lays off Rosabal, Zugasti; promotes execs in network news reorganization

Sylvia Rosabal and Yolanda Zugasti lost their jobs in the news reorganization.

Two months after joining Telemundo as its new EPV of Network News, Luis Fernández today announced a series of changes as part of a reorganization to make the the department more “competitive.”

In an email sent in Spanish to staff, Fernández announced the departures of Sylvia Rosabal, SVP, Network News and Yolanda Zugasti, EP of “Enfoque.”

Rosabal joined Telemundo in 2012 a year after her ouster from Univision, where she had worked for 26 years. Zugasti, who also lost her job during Univision’s management changes in 2011, started at Telemundo in 2013.

Eduardo Suñol is promoted to VP, Telemundo News Digital.

Fernández’s email also announced several promotions:

* Eduardo Suñol has been upped from Senior Executive Producer to VP, Telemundo News Digital, in an effort to strengthen its digital news operations.
* Karen Carranza moves up from L.A. Bureau Chief to Director, Western Region, in charge of the L.A., Texas and San Jose bureaus.
* Leonor Ayala becomes Director, North Eastern Region, in charge of New York and Chicago bureaus.

Victoria Rivas-Vázquez remains in her role Noticias Telemundo Bureau Chief in Washington D.C.  Fernández emphasized the importance of giving bureaus autonomy while improving coordination with the network’s Miami headquarters.

Humberto Durán, on board since November of 2015, stays in his role as VP of News Operations and Production Management, adding Special Projects to his duties.

Fernández also announced that Edgardo del Villar officially becomes news anchor of morning show “Un Nuevo Día,” replacing Neida Sandoval, whose contract was not renewed.

Just as Media Moves reported last week, he confirmed the appointments of correspondents Edgar Muñoz in L.A. and Rubén Pereida in Chicago.

In closing, Fernández acknowledged “all changes generate concern and nervousness” and that he would hold a newsroom Town Hall tomorrow morning to answer questions and concerns.
