Mario Lopez lands first news director job at Univision 62

March 25, 2021 by Veronica Villafañe

After criss-crossing the country over the past two decades, Mario Lopez has landed his first news director job at KAKW Univision 62 in Austin.

Lopez took over the role earlier this month. He replaces Ismael Martínez, who left the company in October 2020 after four years leading the newsroom.

Lopez’s move to Texas also marks his return to Univision, where he previously spent 16 years in multiple roles at different stations around the country.

Prior to Univision 62, he spent almost two years as executive producer at Telemundo Denver. He was a news producer at Telemundo Philadelphia from 2019 to 2020.

Before that, he worked at Univision’s KMEX 34 in Los Angeles and WXTV 41 in New York as a news producer.

Lopez started his career in news as an assignment editor and producer at KFTV 21 in Fresno in 1999.
