News director Samuel Belilty out at Univision 23

March 15, 2023 by Veronica Villafañe 10 Comments

News director Samuel Belilty has exited Univision 23 Miami and is no longer with the company.

General manager Claudia Puig notified station staff of his departure yesterday.

A company spokesperson issued the following statement:

“We are grateful for the contributions, expertise, and commitment that Samuel Belilty brought to our news division over the course of his career at Univision. On behalf of TelevisaUnivision, we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Belilty did not respond to a request for comment about his future plans.

Belilty oversaw the news department at the Miami station since 2017, transferring from the same role at Univision 23 Dallas.

According to the company, Puig “will helm the search for a new VP of News.” In the meantime, Chris Peña, SVP of Local Media News and East Region Content Lead Christine Portela “will support Assistant News Director Miguel Fernandez and the newsroom during the transition.”

Belilty joined Univision Fresno in 1999, starting as creative service director, before moving to the news director position. Eight years later, he moved to Texas for the top news management role at the San Antonio station before taking over the news department in Dallas.

Belilty previously worked in his native Venezuela at Radio Caracas Television.

Its Chris Peña’s fault. Samuel was doing really good in Dallas and Peña brought him to the lion den that the Miami newsroom is. And Peña is still there! Very unfair.

After the Silva-Marrero Era, Miami 23 went down deep and harshly. Everyday for the worse. Maybe the Brass will keep its act together and get rid of Chris P as well. And do not forget the chaos ensued in NY 41 after the arrival of Ms Collins. Creste in steroids.

It must be recognized that UNIVISION take the time to look for someone more bad and mediocre than the outgoing one… as in the case of NY 41 I never thought they would get someone more disastrous than Creste and they did it ! great job !

Samuel is great, he will be successful wherever he goes. They need to get rid of Chris Peña.

Samuel was a yes man, never got to know his Miami team or brother even to know his coverage area. Very hard headed and didn’t accept suggestions. I was surprised he lasted that long! We now know he was busy writing his book, while letting his Venezuelan group of employees run free and enforced rules on others. Chris Peña runs a toxic work environment and unfortunately Ch23 will never be number 1 while he running the show. I wonder how much money Ch23 is still spending on bad research?????

Univision is a mess. After working for so many years at 23 and then in the network, I can see that they still do the same sh1t. They do not care for the employees as they are just another number. They chew you until your flavor is gone, while at the same time, we try to avoid the knives from everyone who want to get ahead. And the funny thing is that many times the so-called directors and administrator have no clue of their jobs. When an employee is well-prepared with experience and a couple of degrees, you immediately become a threat to you supervisor. No sense of morality. And I’m sure with the new owner, things are going to get worse. Glad that I’ve been out of that cesspool.

This is not the only good employee laid off latently in the Local BU.
Anyone who represents a threat for a mediocre and will be out in a bit!

He only cared or listened to his Venezuelan minions. A total joke of a boss. Totally destroyed the Dallas newsroom.

These “directors” (23,41, Net) are FUNESTOS , micromanagers, they are not leaders ! They take the arrogant attitude of dictators who think that this position will last them a lifetime….
