Helft named Forbes magazine’s SF bureau chief

Miguel HelftTomorrow is Miguel Helft’s last day as senior writer for Fortune Magazine. Starting January 20, 2015 leaves he takes on a new job as San Francisco bureau chief for Forbes.

In his new role, he’ll lead Forbes’ technology reporting team, guiding technology coverage, mentoring staff writers, supporting the contributor model, as well as editing Forbes magazine and online features.

Miguel will also be writing regularly for Forbes magazine and Forbes.com, covering top companies and major stories.

“I loved my time at Fortune,” Miguel tells Media Moves. “Forbes offered me a great opportunity to broaden my horizons, take on a leadership role and help to build a top-notch tech journalism team. At the same time, I will have the chance to write insightful, high-impact stories on the companies and people that shape the tech economy. The opportunity was too good to pass up.”

During his three and half years at Fortune, Miguel was one of the lead writers at the magazine, covering Steve Jobs, Google, YouTube, Facebook, big data, venture capital and startups.

He won a New York Press Club award for feature writing for his 2013 cover profile of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg.

Before joining Fortune in 2011, Miguel spent five years at The New York Times as beat reporter covering companies like Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo.

He previously worked at The San Jose Mercury News as a tech reporter and an editorial writer. Prior to that, he was a senior writer at The Industry Standard and a reporter for the Los Angeles Times.

Born and raised in Argentina, Miguel is a Stanford University Computer Science grad, who started his career as a software engineer for Sun Microsystems before switching to journalism.

Helft leaves NYT for Fortune

Miguel Helft has left his job as technology writer for the New York Times.  He took a 6 week break before starting his new gig as senior writer for Fortune.  His first day at the magazine is next Monday, August 15.

Prior to his 4 years with the NYT, Miguel was an editorial writer for the San Jose Mercury News.  He previously worked as a senior writer at The Industry Standard and a reporter for the Los Angeles Times.  A Stanford University Computer Science grad, he started his career as a software engineer for Sun Microsystems.
