Entravision dismantles news operation in Tampa

Samuel and Sarykarmen Rivera - WVEA Tampa

Anchor Samuel Rivera transferred to Orlando, Sarykarmen Rivera stays in Tampa as MMJ after Entravision moves production of Tampa newscast to Orlando.

Univision affiliate WVEA in Tampa will no longer produce its own newscasts. Entravision has decided to “hub” news for Tampa out of its Orlando studios.

According to sources, the company will produce a live-on-tape newscast for Tampa at 5 pm and air Orlando’s Noticias Univision Florida Central live at 6 pm.

Entravision laid off staff, including at least two from the news department, moved three employees to Orlando, and kept three people on board to work as MMJs in Tampa. Staffers were notified on Friday of the changes, which went into effect today.

Samuel Rivera, who took over the anchor role at WVEN in June, returns to Orlando to anchor the Tampa newscast. Executive Producer Noel Ramos was also transferred to Orlando.

Sarykarmen Rivera, who was promoted to anchor in April will be helping on the Tampa assignment desk until she goes on maternity leave later this month. When she returns, she will be an MMJ.

Stephanie Becerra and Carolina Cruz, who joined the station this year, will remain as Tampa-based MMJs.

Media Moves reached out to Entravision, but has yet to receive comment or a statement on the changes.
