Rodríguez out as SBS changes format of Miami’s I95 FM

August 16, 2016 by Veronica Villafañe

Humberto Rodriguez - Ritmo95
SBS flipped its Miami top 40 radio station, La Nueva I95.7 FM to Ritmo 95.7 FM, ousting morning DJ Humberto “El Gato” Rodríguez.

Radio DJ Humberto “El Gato” Rodríguez no longer has a show on SBS in Miami.

“El Show del Gato,” broadcast weekday mornings from 6 to 11 am on La Nueva I95 FM since 2014, was pulled off the air yesterday as SBS changed the station format from top 40 to the first Cubatón station in the country.

Now labeled Ritmo 95.7 FM with the tagline “Cubatón y más,” the station will mostly air Cubatón, but will also feature urban and reggaetón music.

According to Billboard magazine, “while Cuban urban music has gained traction in recent months thanks to hits by Gente de Zona and Jacob Forever, to date the music is far from dominating the charts.”

However, Jesús Salas, SBS’ EVP of programming told Billboard he had “done extensive research” and determined there was “more than enough music to create a station” based on a genre he thought is “becoming a worldwide phenomenon.”

Humberto alerted fans about his departure from SBS airwaves via an Instagram letter, thanking them for their support.

At one point in the letter, he points out: “There are times when others make decisions for us that we should have made ourselves.”

In a follow up post, Humberto reminded his fans they can still tune in to his #LaHoradelGato podcasts on iTunes and to his recently launched show “Homo Sapiens TV” weeknights from 10 to 11 pm on Miami’s Mira TV.
