Telemundo 52 changes its weekday news anchor lineup

April 8, 2021 by Veronica Villafañe

Los Angeles station KVEA Telemundo 52 is making some changes to its weekday news anchor lineup.

Starting Monday, April 12, Dunia Elvir leaves weekday noon and afternoon newscasts for primetime. She’ll co-anchor Noticiero Telemundo 52 at 6 and 11 pm, alongside Enrique Chiabra. She steps into the role left vacant by Ana Patricia Candiani, who was laid off in August 2020. Since then, Chiabra had been anchoring solo.

Elvir anchored mornings at KVEA 52 from 2010 to 2016. She then moved to afternoons and was named anchor for the station’s noon newscast when it debuted in 2018.

Alejandra Ortiz moves from weekday mornings into Elvir’s current time slot, anchoring Noticiero Telemundo 52 al Mediodía and co-anchoring the 5 and 5:30 pm shows.

Ortiz has also bounced around since joining Telemundo 52 in 2017 as the weekend news anchor. A year later, she relocated to weekday mornings to anchor the 5 and 6 am shows.

Sandra O’Neill leaves weekends to take over as co-anchor for the weekday morning newscasts at 5 and 6 am.

O’Neill joined Telemundo 52 in 2018 as weekend news anchor and weekday reporter.

O’Neill’s departure from the weekend anchor desk leaves the spot open. Anchors will be rotating, filling in until the weekend position is filled.

The new anchor lineup is as follows:

5 & 6 am:     Sandra O’Neill and Guillermo Ochoa
Midday:        Alejandra Ortiz
5 pm:            Dunia Elvir and Alejandra Ortiz
5:30 pm:      Enrique Chiabra and Alejandra Ortiz
6 & 11 pm:    Dunia Elvir and Enrique Chiabra

In a statement, Celia Chavez, the station’s president and general manager called it a “refresh” of Telemundo 52’s newscasts.
